So we start with the names, I'm Katarina. Rose. Mel. Tony. Steve. Tess. Richard. Terry. Well, we're all seasoned veterans and this sort of stuff. You want to hear it again? Yes. Why? Well, the same old story. It's all about the one. And most of the scriptures and texts and religions, they call this label they put on the word God as the one. As the almighty. As the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient one. But I don't know that anybody's ever seen or discovered a big daddy somewhere out there. Been sitting in the sky or anywhere. Somewhere else. And where's it all? This manifestation of cosmos, what's it seemingly appearing?
Isn't it space? Isn't it emptiness? Space is empty. They call it, in the world, they call it a cognizing emptiness. And emptiness suffused with intelligence or knowing. And that's the cognizing. Different labels have different meanings to them. Sometimes we get lost in the meaning. lost in the meaning and miss out what it's really pointing to. And we call it a cognising emptiness and we think we are cognising the emptiness. What we see, hear, taste, touch and smell and feel. And who is the we or the I that thinks it's cognising? Is there a separate entity, an individual or a person there? Or is it the innate essence that's patterning, shaping and expressing through this pattern, shape we call the body and the form we call the body and the shape.
And it's all being translated through that pattern. That pattern we call a human being. And that's what I point out. They tell us that clearly. There's one essence patterning, shaping, forming and appearing or expressing as everything, everything in this manifestation is that pattern, shape or form. That's the essence. That's the essence. The tree, the tree is form, nama, rupa. That's what they put on. Nama is the name and rupa is the form. Now the chares are form, which we put the label chair on. The trees are form, we put the label tree on. You and I are forms, which we put the label on. We label the different patterns with the various names or labels we'll be giving.
And we've got ourselves locked into the words or the concepts. to be real, to be the thing, because we've never questioned it, never looked into it. And we've taken this Nama Reva, the name and form we put on it, as the real. I could say a few words there, but that wouldn't be what I was expressing there. And in that cognising emptiness, it's the emptiness that's doing the cognising. It means that space-like awareness is fused with the innate knowing, or intelligence, what I call intelligence is knowing. It's the same as everybody is knowing right now. And you'll put that down to your intellect, or the knowledge, or the gnosis, or the knowingness.
It's a cognising emptiness, it's emptiness itself that's knowing. The pattern, shapes and forms appearing in need a pattern, shape and form to express there. Because the emptiness in its natural state can never move out or away from the emptiness. And the silence that is in that emptiness couldn't even form sounds without something to express through. So the pattern, shapes and forms are needed for all this manifestation to be as it is. Appearing and expressing in all its diversity. Which when you look at it, and see the way it's functioning, points out it's a fuse with the innate intelligence, a wondrous way this manifestation is performing.
Some of it might seem very mundane and ordinary, but look closely into it, and see that it all needs some pattern to express through. And the way it's functioning, got a hive of bees out there in the tree. And each one of those bees helps form the honeycomb, but forms the hive. And they all go out and collect, well not all, but a good majority of them go out and collect the pollen out of it. The flowers and things around. And the queen bear, he lays, gets fertilised and lays eggs for the rest of her life. She's just a leg laying machine, which is where all the bees form from.
But that doesn't imply, doesn't that imply a wondrous way intelligence is forming? And honey can be very useful. Very sweet, natural. Many other things if you look at them, as in nature. You'll see, what I call nature, the essence, is patterning, shaping, forming, expressing as everything. And there's no room for a big daddy out there in the sky, who's going to create it, and make this creation, and form the creatures, things from the creating. And just like Santa Claus is supposed to come down every chimney in the world on Christmas Eve, you realise he couldn't do it when you investigated him. Neither could this big daddy, do any of these things.
But it's the life essence that's expressing through all these patterns. The label to blink your eye, to lift a finger, wave a finger around. Turn your mouth to open and shut. And the tongue to vibrate. And the energy that's coming through it will express as words, shapes and forms. And it's all happening naturally and effortlessly. And it is a wondrous and amazing expression or appearance. And they know that. People have known it down through the ages. Because the Buddha's called it a cognising emptiness. And emptiness is form. So the emptiness is form. And the form is nothing but the emptiness. And it's a transience. And it's a transient manifestation.
It's not static. Transient means it's constant changing. And we take that, we don't see that, we don't look at it, we just take we are here and everything else around us is changing. Not realising, though it's been going on all your life, you haven't got the same body as a little baby or a little child, a teenager or a young man or woman, to the body you've got today, now it's ageing. We haven't noticed that. And that's changing right in this moment in this room. There are thousands of cells dying in that body and being replaced. So it's all transient, it's all changed. They call it a...
What do they call it? Phenomenal manifestation. A phenomenal manifestation. A manifestation made up of phenomena. Look up your dictionary and see the definition of phenomena is that which appears to be. So that we think it's real and take it to be real. It's all appearance only. And it's all a transient appearance, isn't it? What have we done? We've believed we are this body-mind and the things that have got on it, the events, experiences and conditioning that have happened to it, we've taken to be real and labelled. And all these events and experiences are added on to this conceptual I-Hand. And we take the idea or image that we believe ourselves to be and we take the phenomenon to be real.
Not realising it's not real. So when you look into it, there's no creator at all. There's no creation. And there's no creature. What becomes of the creator and the creation? It forms creatures. Creatures. And we call this bug or something else a creature. We call it... Some humans we don't like say it's a horrible creature or something like that. But creation doesn't make any mistakes. It's all expressing as it is. And all its different shapes and forms. And the thing is, it needs to be recognised, re-cognised. The cognising is there. The cognising gets confused, fused or obscured because we've taken on the belief we are separate, we are individuals.
How does that come about? Well, we take on the belief that we were born and we are living as this pattern, shape and form when we learnt words, when the capacity of reasoning develops in us. That's the capacity that is useful to these human beings. It's a very useful capacity. But being a vibration like all the rest of the manifestation, it's self-destructive. And we continue to say there's no one dead stick and there's no one-sided coin. It always appears to have two ends to it and two sides. And so when Shakespeare tells us there's nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so, we like the good and we don't want the bad.
But see, when you recognise it's all the same essence, does it matter which way is patterning or experiencing and expressing? If it's not taken delivery of and reinforced in the belief that there's a right and a wrong, a good and a bad, a pleasant and painful, it'll right itself. Like in nature, it always does. Nature is constantly vibrating dualistically and it continues to express and experience that way. But what happens, all the damage that's caused by the implosions, the explosions, the droughts, the floods, the rains, the tsunamis, the climate changes, the ice ages, all the other things, they change constantly. And it comes back eventually to a equilibrium where everything's all right for a little while and then it'll divide again, into one way or the other.
And both ways, when it reaches its semi-end, are self-destructive. When it gets too good, we can't take it anymore. When it gets too bad, we can't take it anymore. But realise it all comes back to an equilibrium. I can use the analogy of, go to the North Pole, can you go any further north if you're on foot? You can't. And the next step you make must be south. And you go to the South Pole, you can't go any further south, the next step must be north. And where do they meet? It's known, the Afroids, they call it the equator. What's the equator? Equal. Where it's equal.
And again, they call it, I think again in Buddhism, the middle way. Where everything is in the middle. And Becci told you that everything is perfectly resolved in the unborn Buddha mind, he called it the unborn mind. That's not a conceptual mind. It's a natural mind that's not filled with concepts, ideas, images, words. It's just the is-ness that's functioning, patently shaping, forming, experiencing. And he says everything is perfectly resolved in the unborn. And that's exactly right, nature resolves itself. It's only when the idea of birth and death come upon us, and the self-centeredness, the self-centeredness, the reference point, the self-centered and the ego, all one thing, different labels for the one thing, is believed in, and nothing ever suits that selfishness or that self-centered.
And the ego is never satisfied or complete either. So we're constantly trying to make them whole or complete. And it doesn't matter whose toes we tread on or what we do to achieve it, we do it. And that's why all the wars, fears, famines and droughts, and everything are taken on board and believed in, and we suffer accordingly. And Shakespeare made the statement, there's nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes us so. And when Nassar Gaddafi says, when you recognize you are no thing, that is wisdom. And he says, when you realize and recognize you are everything, that is the love. And he says between those two, it doesn't mean either one is static, between those two, my life is ever functioning.
And isn't that in every case? Either one side or the other. One end of the stick or the other. Very seldom do we stay where the equilibrium is, because we always think we can make it better. If it's too bad, we try to make it better. And if it's too good, we try to keep it that way, not realizing it's going to change anything. It's all come about because we've taken on this belief, that we are this person, this individual, this separate entity. And look at that word persona. Where does that come from? It comes from the Latin, persona, the mask. Pointing out we've got a mask of concepts.
We've added on to this idea, without questioning it, without investigating it. We've taken it on board from the time we first started to reason, because our parents told us so. Our school, society and nation have reinforced it, and we've reinforced it ourselves. And we've got this mask of concepts, ideas and images. And we beat the hell out of ourselves with the word, with the mask. Trying to fix the mask. Why don't you tear the mask up and we'll throw it away. And stand naked, in your bare natural awareness. And that's what one of the books, Buddhist books has translated. Self-realization through seeing with naked awareness.
And it's all in that title. See with the unadorned awareness. Not adorned by any concepts or ideas. They say also, what's wrong with right now if you don't think about it? And to do that, you've got to look beyond the thought. You can't pause the thought, because what happened if you paused the thought? What would be doing it? Wouldn't it be a thought, trying to pause the thought? And that's why you can't do it, because it can't happen. But when you look into a thought, what's a thought? When you see a thought, it's nothing but a sound, a vibration, a movement of energy, which we've added the concepts, images, labels and ideas onto.
So what happens, if you let the thought go? If you say, I'm going to let it go, that's a thought. And you won't let it go. You know, well it's gone now, that's a thought. And any way you try to grasp it with a concept, with a mind, will be with a thought. But just lately, thoughts dropped off here and there for a moment. As soon as I said that, that's come up as a thought or a concept. But it's known, the thought is no more real than any of the other manifestations we've looked into. So when the meaning doesn't go into it, the word and the belief doesn't go into it, it's lost its hold.
Just like they say, the snake and the rope, is a metaphor they talk about, they've got a saying to it. When you step out of, a boat steps out of his cabin on a dark night, it's been raining, he stands on a wet piece of rope, and he immediately gets the vision and the idea there's a snake he's trodden on, because the squirm's under his feet. And then the fear and the trembling come into it, because he believes he could be bitten. Fear, tremble and goose pimps come up, and his hair stands on end. And somebody comes and shines a torch on it. Look at it, it's only a wet piece of rope.
Oh shit. And there's an immediate sense of relief. He's seen through it. There's not a snake there at all. But does the fear and the trembling and the goose pimps settle down straight away? It doesn't, because it's a physical, it's become a physical thing, not a mental thing any more. The mental has formed the physical. And it takes a while for that physical to settle down. And if we don't, when all these things happen, we don't let the physical settle down when the fear, the anguish, the intelligence that'll drop in the thought and leave it as it is. That's just a thought. And let it go.
See what's there if you let the thought go. But we don't. We keep it there, and it keeps regurgitating itself and coming up and going. And we believe in it. And go along with the belief. And you're never free of it. And we've done it for years and years and years. And everybody around us has done it. Unless you've looked into some of this stuff and seen, read some of the stuff that's been read by the people that have recognised the so-called beings or people that have recognised their true nature and seen through it and tried to put it in words, concepts, ideas, which can only point towards it, the actuality of it needs to be cognised by each and every one of its seeming separate pattern.
Nobody can ever do it for you. Now we've got so-called saint sages and seers going around and pat you on the head with a peacock feather, thinking they're going to give it to you, hit you between the eyes with a big thumb instead of a fist, and think they're going to fix it for you. They've got you doing standing on your head and doing all sorts of yogic asanas, thinking it's going to fix you. They're all good for the health and all of their use, but they're not going to give you this recognition or understanding. Why? Because that is all there is. That is all there is and you are already that.
You've always and ever been that. From the time the first memories came about with the learning of words. Learning of words. And even before that you were that, when you were in the body, little baby. When you were in the womb being formed. When you were in the food, the essence of the food your father or your mother ate. When you were in the air that they breathed. When you suffused everything like it is suffusing everything now. You are that essence. Never been anything other than that. And this pattern, shapes and forms we are expressing, experiencing through at this moment, will last. They're going to change.
But what happens? Can they go anywhere? You're in space now. Get out there and try and get out of it. Go away from space. See how you go. You realise you can't get away from it. And if you go out in space somewhere without a space suit, you might feel a bit different, you might feel a bit colder. Can't get in the air. You've certainly changed. Put yourself in the air. You'll still be in space. Recognise there's no way out. Except with a recognition of what your natural state is. And see that's living you, breathing you, beating your heart, growing your family, your fingernails, digesting your food.
Allowing the thoughts to happen. Recognising, recognising the thoughts as words or labels. Feeling the senses, the tasting, touching, smelling, the thinking, the hearing. Doing, breathing hard. Being, doing. All of these things. In this pattern, as it is here, so it is there. And there is here. And here is there. Always, everywhere. Or as they put, now here. When they change the nowhere and put the W on the end of the no and take it off the where, it's now here. And there is any other place you can be. So how did this idea of a separate world come about? How did this idea of a separate entity and individual come about?
How did you come about in the first place? Well naturally, you go back to the thing, I was born. Yeah? Can you remember that? Can you remember being born? You can't. When did you begin? Well we'll have a look at that. You can't remember your birth, you can't say you began at birth. When did you begin? You realised. You can only remember from about two, two and a half, it might have been one or less, or it might have been more, three, or something like that. It all depends how well that intelligence is functioning through that, expressing through that pattern. Wherever it was, when you began to learn words.
And realised from that, every word you've ever spoken, or ever liked to speak, has been learnt. There is no word you were born with, and no word that is your natural state. Every word is a label. Because when you look at it and see that's all the word is, it's a label. A meaning, we put on that vibrating intelligence energy. We've put on all the things in it. Even the idea of thing is a label. Something. Something is not discriminating until you put the label. This thing is a chair. This thing is a tree. This thing is a blade of grass. This thing is you.
That thing is you. It's me. This thing is me. It's all things that we live in. Things that are different vibrating pattern, shapes and forms. So the intelligence is doing its job. Naturally, effortlessly. And the universe is functioning as it should. As it tells you in that little statement, the Desiderata, no doubt the universe is functioning as it should. And it is. And there's no big daddy out there that's guiding it, steering it, getting distressed and going to throw you into hell for being a natural naughty boy or doing, or girl, or doing this or doing that, or being a terrible sinner, which they put on you and keep you in captivity and make it so you look at the word and go into it.
It doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't have to be that. It's the freedom, peace and joy that you are. It mightn't seem that way if you had a traumatic childhood and this happened here. Or you're not thinking of living yourself the way people think you should and think that's the norm. Each expressing a unique pattern, shape and form. There's no norm to it all, Stephen. No two blades of grass are the same. No two fingerprints are the same. But we've got this concept or idea we've got to fit in and remember. It's the ones that haven't fitted in that have recognised this and are able to see it and passed it on.
They haven't adopted the normal things. There must be a bit more to it than this and they've really looked into it and recognised and seen for themselves. And the Bibles, the Scriptures and the words and all the different religions have started and formed around those. And there's a few who down through the ages have recognised it. And it's going on to this day and there's no reason why more and more people shouldn't recognise it. Because you've got the things that we're all to do it with. The computers, the ways of communicating and getting around. You can go here and there and listen to this one or hear that one if you need to.
But the main thing is whether they're hearing, they're seeing, they're tasting, touching, smelling, you do something about it yourself. Not just hearing the words and taking them to be real. Investigate and see if what you're hearing is the actual. It is the real. I ask myself, who's this happening to? It's happening to me. And what is this me? What is the me? Have a look at that. Me is another word for I. I and me are one and the same thing. But what is I if you're not loading concepts onto it? What can you do with I? I, this I, that I. What I need, I see, I hear.
The I of itself, the word I, can't do anything. But to give it some substance and some independent nature, we've added some of these concepts onto it. I'm Bob. A good fellow or not so good. I've had a good, bad childhood or a reasonable childhood or a happy childhood, whatever it was. I'm Australian. This is where I was born, so I'll take that on. You know. I don't like this. I don't like this or I like that. You know. I've been taught all these concepts to believe in this and believe in that. Like this and don't like that. Discriminate all the different aspects of it.
And added these concepts onto that I. Because you can say I, I, I forever. What's that going to do for you? Nothing. But when you put I am Bob onto it or I am Bill or whatever your name is, it's a whole different program. Different shows. All together now. And I don't like it or I do like it. Why? Because this happened to either this me or I. Or that happened to this I or me. And I'm fearful about it or I'm anxious or I'm depressed because I don't fit in or I'm introverted or I'm extroverted. All the concepts added onto it to give it some substance and make it real.
Now we can beat the shit out of this conceptual image. Make the most of it if you're fearful, anxious and depressed. Make the most of it. Beat yourself up a bit more. Be a bit more fearful, a bit more anxious, be a bit more depressed. You got it there. See where it takes you. And do the other thing. I'll have a look into it. Is this real? Is this what I actually am? And maybe you might come to realize or recognize something that you haven't seen before. And that might turn you around. And then you don't have to be that full of that fear, that angst, that anxiety, that understanding, stridee, that guilt, that shame, that jealousy, that envy, all that psychological crap.
That we then, we've got something to work on so we try to work that out in the mind. And they say, you hear? Well, science is getting very close to it. Yeah, maybe it is. Been getting close for years but still science is not it. Never was and never will be yet no matter how close they get to it. but they're moving in that direction and we can move in that direction too and see for ourselves a little bit on that without going just question this word the great perfection they tell us is non conceptual awareness perfection is a word but it means the totality or the absolute the absolute and the perfection are one and the same thing really their words their concepts but take the concept on it or it it's natural absolute then that's natural perfection then without putting it a label it's kind of discriminated or I'm nearly perfect I'm nearly nearly the absolute maybe I'll be the absolute but I finished this meditation I'll read this book I'll go and see this next career he'll be the one not really you are the one and the only one and if you don't like what you hear you go out and do that nothing's stopping you if you like the question look at it again and again and again it's no big deal because something it will happen something that brings you to look at this stuff will make it a little bit further and make you persist I bring that persistence about and in the recognition of what you recognize that you'll never find the answer to it what's the other thing I wrote a card thing with physicists physics well whatever it is yeah I never have yet found the answer to it because if you can't find the answer what would that tell you maybe the answer is not in the mind that's all I've understood and that's all I've done tried to work things out with the mind all my learning all my acquiring and all the rest of these words and then your ideas images and concepts and imagine mad things I wish to bring about more concepts ideas and images another and the saga tells you nothing in trouble you accept your own imagination what you image in imagine my conceptual image and a statement in the Bible we don't understand a scene again they are shot not make unto thyself any graven images we think they're talking about science star and I and gods we've set up and worship there they go but they don't tell they what they're talking about really is these graven images even these images we've got engraving in our heads in our mind in their concepts don't make them up and see where you finish up and we ask you because that's how it's come about you put all these concepts in your mind and made the concepts out of these concepts onto the I thought to give us some substance and some reality without any things added to it what reality or substances I got what reality and substances me God if I'm not putting a consequence other concepts on it none whatsoever and you realize that all we've ever looked for what everywhere we've looked for this is always in the mind everything you've ever done and every like it if in the mind until you recognize that stuff always and if you realize we looked in the mind for all this time and not all these things the mind and never for found the answer wouldn't you're innate intelligence maybe I've been looking in the wrong direction maybe I've been wasting my time reading this book or don't know has it done anything for me oh yes it took me to oh yes it will soap you up a certain way maybe it's done its job that's enough maybe it's asking you to look further now go a little bit deeper get the old thoughts concepts ideas and images what's the if I'm not conceptualizing what's there if I'm not imagining what's there if I'm not thinking as they Shakespeare said good or bad pleasant painful have I disappeared without the concept without the word well I gladly give up the concepts every night when I go to sleep I don't recognize that I'm aware but there is an awareness or knowingness there or I wouldn't wake up and that label is not real either awareness or knowing but we use it to try and describe the life that you are maybe when looking in the wrong direction and you realize that every direction I've ever looked or ever liked to look as always and will always be in the mind if you recognize and realize that what why am I going to look what way is there out of the mind and it might dawn on you there and then there's only one way out of the mind full stop don't go there and then when you might start seeing what have I without the thought and you realize you can't say anything without a thought because if you say something it's this or it's that or something else that will be with a thought and thinking started to come up again you can't say anything without a thought but if you lost that presence of awareness try it and see an awareness of being is bliss that's the Satyagặtäännánd Sit in that and the conceptual images we were relating to all the time.
The reference point, the self-centered ego, constant thing we're relating to. Relationship is duality. Relativity or relationship, it's the same thing, is duality. And in duality we've moved away from the one essence. Hear over Israel, the Lord thy God is one God, there is none other. In the beginning was the Word, the Word was God. The Word was God. That's all it is, a Word, none other. Muslims say there's no God but God. Allah is His name, none other. But they put a label on it and lose sight of it, it gets obscured. Christians say it's omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience. Totality, they're one totality, they put different words, Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Buddhists say there is a great perfectionist, non-conceptualist. What is the perfectionist? The perfectionist is the one who is the perfect. He who has no awareness, no God or awareness or Buddha without a concept. That is the way to go and that's where the answer lies. That's where the dropping away, the fear, the anxiety, the stress, the guilt and everything else will come up. That doesn't mean to say the reasoning capacity won't go on. Reasoning can be very useful. Because there are rumors and ideas, somebody's mind won't. So was the television, the computer. and the iPhones and all the ideas in somebody's mind once. But it's all so self-destructive.
Realise that. It's the reasoning of the mind that tells me I'm not good enough, or I'm fearful, or I'm depressed, I've had a bad childhood, and this has happened to me, and this is damaging me even now. It's carrying it on. And we do, we keep regurgitating it, carrying it around, and keep beating ourselves up. There's an old saying around here, you know, the dog will return to his vomit. Anything regurgitate, everything regurgitate, you take up again and chew it up again, and regurgitate it again. Do you want to do that? Do you have to do it? No. Now look at this, maybe investigate and see if there's anything there.
I've said many times the way to go about it. If it doesn't work, try something else, or listen to somebody else that might tell you a different way. But it comes back to basically that thinking is the only problem you've ever got, and you're told that many things you ever have. So away you go. If you've got any questions, arguments, or some understanding of it or recognising it, express it. It may help others, or what you've done. OK, so I just add this. Bob has nothing against science. He loves documentaries. Because it sounds almost as if he's crucifying the science. It's not the case at all.
It's just that science has some answers that steer more questions. So whenever they find something meaningful, the next thing, like let's say they found exact place in the brain where the hallucinating of this languaging self happens. Brilliant. I mean, why don't stay with that? Why next question? OK, how is it happening? Which neurons are taking place in that? So because the function of science is actually to create more questions and to create answers, obviously it all happens within the realm of thinking. So if we want to go beyond thinking, we can enjoy the science. It's gorgeous. Oh my God, it's beautiful. Like a music. We can enjoy beautiful music, a symphony, or beautiful fragrance.
But the answer to have no more questions is not in having plenty of questions. It's in having plenty of answers. Like to be really free from that turmoil of wanting to know or wanting to understand is to go beyond the need to know. It is actually to find yourself in a place where I don't know and there is no I that doesn't know. It's totally comfortable. So science usually doesn't take us there. It gives us answers, and those answers could be pointers. They're actually quite lucid. The way the thoughts replicate themselves using the imitation process. Brilliant. Why not stop there? And really recognise how the process is happening.
It will be the same thing as Bob is saying, watch your mind and see how it goes into duality, into the opposite patterns. Or recognise the thought, feeling, emotion as just a vibration. But usually the science offers us answers and then right away more questions. But it is to be enjoyed. And it is if we really want to find the freedom from the questionnaire, from someone who constantly needs to know and has desire to find something else, to be something else, to experience something else, something more, something more pleasurable. To be free from that desiring entity. That having answers is not going to take us there.
Having answers is actually who we are. Who is having the answer? It's actually feeding that entity. Now I know. Now I'm wiser, smarter. I'll be even more and even wiser, even smarter when I read the next book. So it's not the way. The way is, as Bob said, stop thinking. And again, who is there to stop thinking? But offering the pointer is to inspire something, some resonance within the deeper, much, much deeper layers of the essence than just the surface waves of the mind. And that inspiration may actually have an effect. And it may bring about that recognition. That, oh my God, without that ripples, the mind, the commentary, the waves, there is still that aliveness, that beautiful sense of existence.
That sense which is, like, for me, there's really always dying back into it. It is dying out of the surface and diving into that nothingness, which is so rich and is so, it's nothing and yet is absolute, it's like rock-solid intensity of existence. Even though we got used to this, I remember Tony was bringing up, I think from Cole, a brilliant example of how we desensitize ourselves using, like, the comfort zone or temperature. Actually, this way, you know, because we have exact same temperature everywhere. When the temperature drops three degrees, we're freezing. When the temperature rises three degrees, we're boiling. Like, come on. But the opposite thing we do with the other sense is, like, with the food, if it doesn't have loads of sugar, it's blunt.
When it doesn't have a lot of salt or pepper, it's blunt. But actually bringing up the sensitivity into that, like, desensitizing ourselves from that sensational thoughts and stories and just coming back into that subtleties where the, where nothing really intense has to take the attention away and the sense of presence becomes a priority. It becomes something that is, that it has a specific quality. It doesn't really have quality, but it is and it isn't. It just has to be experienced, really, and it can. And it's not really experienced as a thing because it is the experiencing. It is the experiencing when it isn't distracted by all that high intensity, the boiling or freezing or salty or sugary or huge drama or worry or fear, all that distractions that take away that precious life essence or attention.
It's not taking away. It's also precious. This is also beautiful. It is also to be celebrated. But if we really want to find the core or the source or the essence of it, occasionally, from time to time, or even just once, to dive into that base, that basic screen, and then later on, yeah, go with the birds, wander around, but then you know that wandering is not who you are. That movement of attention is just part of the functioning. But you, knowing your core, your essence, knowing yourself as a source, now you can really enjoy it because now you're not taking it away. You're taking it personally.
Now you are not being tormented by all the dramas. Do you want to say something? Hm? You wanted to say something? Well, if you like, I'll say. Yeah. I'll hold it. We generally ask ourselves when things are going wrong, who's this happening to? Well, we should, you know, who's it happening to? Well, how is it? What about asking why is this happening? And you realise, and generally, we've got all the opposites, all these bad things are seemingly happening to you. Why? Maybe it's because it wants to wake you up. It wants to wake you up. It's taken you through all the deep shit until you get into the cellar and something's dead.
That's what it did to me years and years ago. You know, the deepest depths. And turned me around, brought me back. So it's taken on board, oh poor me, it's happening to me and all the rest. Why? Why? It might take you, might make you take another look and see what's there. Give it a go. Maybe you would like to share something. Yeah. Some of your experiences, something that could inspire others. A little insight, a little realisation, a little moment of relief, a moment of a shift from, out of the identification with the form. I find there's a competition going between the juiciness of thoughts.
I can't name the quality of what it is, but there's something really nice about silence. But it hasn't yet got so deep and attractive as to inhibit my wandering back into the, as I said, the juiciness of thoughts. I mean, I'm on that cusp. So if you notice, my silence sings. My emptiness is all, you ever got around humming a tune in your head all day? And just, you know, what's that energy vibrating? It vibrates in some song you might have heard years ago or some modern hit, something like that. Play with that, see that, play with that energy. Don't worry about the words, oh this is not spiritual, or it's not, no, no, no.
Better better if it's a dirty ditty. If it's, if it's rewarding, if it's reverberating in your head, let it, let it recognize the energy that's doing it. Also, another thing, it seems like as you say it, and I, well I wouldn't blame you, but it seems like you would have a preference for the silence to become more attractive than the sound. But, but what you are really, whether it vibrates or it doesn't, it has no, ultimately in the core of your essence, there is no preference. Find a place where you are that silence, occasionally just staying, staying still, and other instances going into a thought.
Because the freedom is freedom from, from preferences and desires. When you don't really care whether the thought is there or is not there. Yeah. Yeah. You know the background is always there. And that depth is always there too. I mean it's really just about stepping back from anything that is happening into the place, where almost as if you step back to the place where you sleep, you don't have preferences, dreams, desires, nothing, unless you're dreaming, that's a different story. But really just stepping out of wanting anything what is not, anything different than what it is now. If now is thinking, you can still kind of be aware of that, of that vibration, of that movement, with that completely neutral type of, initially the curiosity is not a bad place to be.
But, but, but, but later on it's just completely, even stepping out of curiosity and being completely neutral about it. Whatever the machinery is doing. It's just like you are more or less neutral about the sounds going out, outside because you don't have any control over the sounds. Whether they are traffic sounds or they are birds or they are kids yelling. It may be annoying at times but you don't really put much of the attention on trying to do something about it. Because it's out of your control. control and thoughts are just the same they also out of your control you can't do anything it's just like a traffic on the street is the traffic here so if you really step out even from the preference towards silence or even from the desire for that preference and just see what's going on from the place where you don't mind there is such a place it may not be very obvious or easy to find but actually relaxing back like I don't care okay I don't care this I you know like really not caring although caring is beautiful too because this is something that should not go missed the desire for silence is the sweetest way of expressing devotion towards the truth is your heart calling is the heart warning to go home so when because you know you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you know you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone I've been going through those type of desires for years and I learned to translate them when the longing was showing up as love because longing for truth longing for peace longing for home is love and then when you understand it as love rather than desire a kind of it's not too bad and when it's not too bad the clinging the the stress all of it goes away and the relaxation of the desire is gone and you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone you're not alone happens naturally the acceptance love is easier to accept than than desire or preference or resistance towards the noise and attraction towards the quietness so this type of you know it's almost like reframing rather than seeing the I don't know why the silence is still not attractive the why is still not more attractive than than the thought you know I wish it was that kind that kind of thing is not attractive to me it's not attractive to me it's not attractive to me it's not attractive to me it's not going to last that holds the going to last that holds the energy off of desire and resistance but while you energy off of desire and resistance but while you actually see it as oh my gosh actually see it as oh my gosh I just I'm I'm so in love with coming home I just I'm I'm so in love with coming home and absolute freedom yes and and five please let me give you some family canp fallen jak do?
recognizing this this desire for suffer экs noise I'm allcolored in the light you i also would love to come into situations this is how it expresses it expresses as desire as lyve love just like love so in this too it expresses it in silence to find love the feeling that love that desire like certain things that're very personal way of serenade I still feel a certain way of me and because it is this on earth i just feel you know that there is a preference for silence. So that love is already here. Eve is already here. There's no need for tension. Oh my God, yeah, that's love.
Okay. Because that will make it so much easier than trying to fight or trying to, or trying, any sort of trying to get that silence to be more attractive. Because trying is always coming from resistance. You don't want it. Thank you. Thank you. I've always been someone who has tried to grow and change and achieve things and do things and want things, then work towards them and then get the thing. But the person who's trying to get them is the little me, the small me, the separate me. So that would be the person who would want it, and then that would be the person who would also get it, and then go like, yay, you know, pat on the head.
But since I've had a bit of a glimpse of who I actually am, which of course was sort of an achievement in a sense, the little me kind of had a bit of a sulk because it was like, whoa, if it's not me doing it, then I'm not achieving it. Then what's worth doing and why should I do anything? So he kind of took his ball and went home for a while. And I went through a period of very difficult time. And I think that's what I've learned. And I think that's what I've learned. And also, it's kind of like, well, why do anything? Because I'm already everything, and I can't really fail.
And it's just kind of like, well, I don't really have any of the motivation that I thought I had. So I went through a very nihilistic period of, well, nothing's worth doing, well, nothing is worth attempting or doing. And then that sort of passed. And then what I realized, and then I went through a period of that last few months, and I went through a period of that last few months of more personal change that I hadn't done for a long time. And what I realized is that before, as I was pushing in a direction trying to achieve something for my small eye, that there was always something pushing in the other direction.
It was almost like I wanted to do it, but a part of me didn't want to. So it was like I would fight through that, do it anyway. Whereas now, I've just sort of given up it being personal. I've just given up it being personal. And I think that's a process that's a personal achievement. And things are just very easy, suddenly just very easy. Because it's like, well, if nothing's worth doing or blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, but I've got to do something, then it's just like, well, that seems like the obvious thing to do right there. So let's just do that. And things are just been, and I've gone through more transformation the last two months than I have during the last five years on some really core levels that I've just been fighting and fighting and fighting.
That I've just gone, you know, I'm gonna do that. And then, you know, I'm just missing out on some things. And I've just been fighting and fighting and fighting. Then I've what I give up oh I did it yeah but you know this this still they there's still the ego kind of going I know I'm not responsible for that yeah he's still sort of sulking a little bit yeah I'd seen the circuit out I went back and I was in the ashram and doing all the discipline things to do there that all dropped off me like that and again was left with nothing there nothing to do nothing to be nowhere to go nothing to see and you know what the hell am I gonna do next that's over yeah I think that's it.
Thank you. what is it 30 odd years ago now? 42. I'm going all right things have been done and did you know move me out of that brought me back here. It's funny how we naturally just go against the stream and we fight with everything and then now when you discover the secret of effortless living yes you exactly go with that you know it's almost like a sixth sense open up like intuition that's obvious thing to do and you do it almost dancing flowing and funny enough the essential things are always done sometimes there is a creativity coming up on top like a wave and sometimes there's not and not neither one is a problem that's something as if you kind of know that you're one with life so when life wants you to go and do this it gives you a thought while if you think you are in control you try to superimpose impose some sort of a rigid structure on the flow of life.
And of course that's painful, that's so much effort. The whole thing of what happens when you get all your truths lined up and then you achieve it or not. And you don't achieve it. Why? Maybe this is going to show me something and it will take it out. I remember teaching a class, I was doing a demonstration of counselling with someone. And it was just a short session. So the idea was to demonstrate the techniques of counselling, some of the techniques of counselling. So we were chatting and feeding back and searching for meaning and paraphrasing. And that was good. That was good but nothing. There was nothing.
Not much movement. And then I said, look, let's just sit for a second. Let's just sit quietly for a second or so. And so we did. We sat for a couple of minutes and then quite suddenly there was a change in her, a change in her facial expression, a change in her convictions. And she expressed sort of suddenly she felt very excited about something. Rather than depressed or worried or anxious about something. Which is good. And so we finished the session after that. And the question then became in terms of demonstrating what happened. And why did it happen? And how do you do that? And what technique was that?
And so on and so forth. But really it was like it actually just happened. I was, you know, it just happened. It was a good indication of silence allowing something to fill up the place rather than, I guess you need to create a container of some sort. But after that, I was like, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. But after that, if it stays empty, something fills it up and then the problem is explaining it. So that's that story.
And being able to actually not explain things and just stay with, I have no idea that was a miracle. That's a concept which I really liked about the Course in Miracles. It says that everything that is a sudden shift in understanding. While you realize that whatever your brother or your whoever you blame them for hasn't done and whatever you thought happened didn't. Because you just seize your story for a moment and you completely walk up from that fixed ideas. And then suddenly you have this moment of, oh. And this they call miracle. It's a miracle. Yeah. Yeah. Why not? And then you can have the miracles like a thousand times a day.
Why not? I've had them questioning it. Krishnamurti said about, you know, he says you wake up and your house is on fire. And he said, what do you do? He says, you go and find out where did it start? Was there a match that lit it or somebody put it through? Was there this? Put the bloody fire out. Put the bloody fire out. Put the bloody fire out. Instead of saying, you know, looking for the reason why, how, when it started and all the rest of it. That's what we do is just, hey, question these. Listening to you or listening to anything has a side effect of bringing you into thought.
Sometimes not listening also has this side effect. Yeah. You shut up because I'm trying to get into silence here. Well... Yeah, the trying again. The act of trying is the earnestness, the love. Nothing wrong with that. It's just to recognize it and let it go and just, yeah, move on. You know, I spent some time just working, over the years working on not being distracted. It just seemed drawn to, like, it seemed like a good idea. So it's been a fantastic hotel. So I'd set myself up in a hotel with a rugby game above me. And read manga strips while all these guys were sitting on the couch, you know, making a big noise.
Just doing various things like that. Just so distraction became not an issue, really. And I guess that's why, I don't know, there's just never been a drawing here to go after an ashram or somewhere quiet. It's just always been to plump myself down in the middle of busyness. Doing the whole, you know, meditation with your eyes wide open thing. It's just, you know, I can look back and I can say there's a personality type there that's more about expressiveness and community and whatever. Yeah. And, but, you know, I served. And this just happened. It's clearly, it never felt I was choosing to do that. It was just too boring to me.
It was a good one. Yeah, it is. It's such a great pointer what you were just saying. To actually see life as something that nobody is doing, but something that is constantly, spontaneously happening. It's happening on every level. Just like seeing is happening. Hearing is happening. Thinking is happening. Making meaning is happening. Nobody does it. Like nobody lives life. Like how was Nisargadatta saying it? There's only life. Only life. Nobody lives a life. Yeah, so the life leaves you. The life, the pure unadorned life filtered through the senses of the body shows up as the seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, smelling, thinking. It's like light going through the crystal.
White light. Suddenly seven or eight or how many colours you want to count depends on the sensitivity of the light. So it's just one life. Doing everything and seeing how things spontaneously happen is a great adventure. Because now if I don't engage anyone in here who is seeing, who is hearing, who is thinking, is thinking right or is thinking wrong or it should be seeing something better or eating something tastier. If all that stuff is dropped off and the senses are really changing. Yeah. If all that stuff is dropped off and the senses are really just engaging with the content of pure happening, pure spontaneous happening moment to moment, then life is a miracle.
It is. It only gets, I mean it's still a miracle even if there is a doer taking credit for it. But then it is painful and instead of appreciating the miracle of it, we are resisting the pain, the suffering. But really if there is just the way Tony is showing, watching life happen. Watching life happening. It's not that difficult. I mean every one of us has the moments throughout the day when this is happening. When the inner dialogue and taking credit is not that prominent. Because we are busy with something that takes all the attention. Or we are not busy but just somehow the senses are functioning and the thinking stops for a moment.
Or we wake up in the morning and before the thinking starts. And maybe there are little scrapes of the last night dream or whatever is happening. But nobody is really judging the content. It's just passing through. Or you can hang out with God. That may be actually causing a lot of thinking and judgement. Yeah, sure. Terri, say something. So many topics. Come on. So what is it that is going on? Richard, can you hold it? Why are we here? Why do we come here? Why are we on this path? Why are we seeking? Why are we searching? Why, why, why? It has nothing to do with any of us.
It's to the why. All the patterning, even the notion of a me. Even the thoughts that seem to be in the mind. To manifest locally here. We still believe that there's a me that needs to recognize that it's not this or that. Now if there is just one. If there is just absolute one. Non duality. One. Then none of us sitting in this room are responsible for any single solitary thought. Even the idea of a me being here. None of us are responsible for that. Because what also gets manifested through the so called individuals is an idea of a me that's here. Which is source.
It's source that's responsible for every single thought. Every single feeling. Every vibration. Every emotion. Even the idea that there's a me here. Is all coming from source. You can check it out. You know. When you're asleep at night and you're dreaming. And all sorts of stuff manifests in a dream. Who's doing that? You? Are you creating the dream? Who the hell's doing that? It's so full on, the dream. That there's even me, the dreamed character, in the dream. Who's doing that? That's a movement of energy. There's pictures, images. There's mountains, trees, people. All. Everything that happens in this life. Can and does get experienced when you're lying on your bed sound of bloody sleep at night dreaming.
But you are not the dreamer. You're not creating any of it. What is? If not you? Now, the exact same thing applies to this so-called waking state that we believe we're in. We believe we're awake. What's the reference point? Well, I know what it's like to be asleep when I'm lying on my bed dreaming. That's my reference point. What we're waking from in this so-called waking state. The waking state is the belief in the dream that happens and occurs in this waking state. Exactly the same. Whatever arises in the dream when you're asleep, it arises in this so-called, what we believe is the awaking state.
It's another dream state. It's absolutely another dream state. And you can watch it. The idea is to become aware that all of this, including the so-called selfing, can't have anything to do with the so-called individual self. Because you'd fucking stop it. Come on. You would stop it. Every single problem that a human being has manifests between their bloody sleep and their waking state. Every single problem that a human being has manifests between their bloody sleep and their waking state. All of it. All of it. It's what I think of a certain situation. Or it's how I want things to be. Or it's how I can't accept the way things are.
Where's all that information coming from? In here. And none of us are doing that. None of us are responsible for that. So if you look closely, what is actually happening is Source dreams every single one of us sitting in this room into this. There is only Source. There is only that. Otherwise, non-duality is a crock of shit. It is. Or it's some sort of concept and I've got to try and get my head around it. And yeah, look, eventually, me will come to understand what non-duality is. Give me a break. There's two straight away. Me and the understanding. So all that's happening, all that's happening, there is no individual me sitting here that has free will and can choose whatever it likes.
Can't. It totally can't. It's all a dream. Why do you think this is called an awakening? What are we awakening from? Really? If we are constantly told you already are that, I'm not going to awaken from that. If I already am that, that's a given. I already am that. Okay. So what am I awakening from? That there's no me here. That it is all a dream. And please, look at what happens when you're lying on your bed at night sound asleep and there's dreaming going on. Where's the me then that's responsible for that? Where is it? Where's the me that's separate from the dream that's occurring in here when we're asleep at night?
Where is it? Can you actually say, here I am and I take full responsibility for the dreams that occur when I'm lying on my bed sound asleep at night. I do that. Who you believe yourself to be is the character in the dream in that moment. And it seems extraordinarily real whilst you're in the dream. Whilst we're in the dream. Here. We're in the dream here. We think it's real. We think there's a me. We think there's stuff happening. And it's not. When you first wake up in the morning, when you first wake up, there's the absolute recognition, whether you're aware of it or not, it is there.
There's the absolute recognition that you are now awake compared to what you thought you were or believed yourself to be in the dream when you were lying on the bed sleeping and dreaming. The me that was in there. And sometimes that can even take a moment to get over. But it's not. It's not. It's not. It's not. It's not. Depending on what the dream was. Sometimes you can wake up in the morning, bang, just wake up and the whole... the whole dream just disappears. There's just absolutely no interest in it. And the me character that's in that dream cannot know what it's like to experience being awake.
It can't know. The character in the dream know what it's like when you wake up in the morning it can't experience that awakening because as soon as that awakening in the morning happens it disappears it's gone it's exactly the same here it's exactly the same that's why that analogy gets used so often as and has been used so often over the years the dream state why do they say that maybe they mean it literally it is a dream I've got no idea how as Steve was saying it was beautiful here in you share Steve I've no idea what this is gonna do next I've no clue but it's a buzz sitting back watching it same as you the other thing I wanted to touch on was all of this manifestation that we see around us as Bob eloquently points out is nothing but a vibration of energy all of it but what's the and it all you know when it's interpreted it's interpreted as being split it's interpreted as being dual from this perspective yeah me in fact that we say this movement for there to be movement there's got be one point there in one point there we take it to be real we take it to be and don't get me wrong it is real it's the paradox it is real it's just not what we perceive it to be why not because the senses that we've got here are so limited, so limited, especially the sixth one, the mind.
That is so limited. All it knows, all it can understand is duality. That's all. That's why Bob says you'll never find the answer in the mind because that's how the mind functions. It's the mind that creates the idea of duality, of the split. It's just the mind that creates that. What's the one thing that you, sitting in this room, in this so-called body, if you took it away, the one thing, if you took it away, this couldn't be here. And I'm not talking about the life or the essence. I'm talking about practically sitting in this room, here in this manifestation, what's happening here. What is it totally dependent on?
Space. Now, is space split? Is it dualistic? Is it whole? Is it non-dual? Space I'm talking about. Just pure, empty space. Does it care about anything? Now, without that space, none of this seeming manifestation could be here. And we give it absolutely nothing. No attention whatsoever. The only time we generally give it attention is if, you know, we're faced with the notion that, shit, my car's broken down. I've got to walk 10 kilometers that way in space to get to the nearest town. Then space becomes an issue. It's only me that would say that. So, this source or this that's being pointed to, which can only be realized when there's a need to be realized.
And there's the absolute recognition that this is a dream. All of it is a dream. My meanness is a dream. We're being lived or dreamed into existence with the belief that I am. It's me and I am. So, that that's being pointed to is not dissimilar to that that I was just pointing to. Space. Space ain't dual. It's not dualistic. But we need the space there for the so-called duality to arise in. Distance, time, here, there, up, down, left, right. Without that space, none of this manifestation would arise. So, there's space back here, without which space wouldn't arise out here. If you want to start getting right back to source, absolute source.
Without this, there would be none of this, including space. Space like awareness. That's why it's called that. Space like awareness. But it's source. It's responsible for everything and nothing. The great paradox. So, it's seeing that. It's seeing that. You know, I can tell you. It's this and it's that and it's not this and it's not that. But until you look for yourself, it's all. If one's trying to get an intellectual understanding of this, you're wasting your time. Totally wasting your time. But if you actually are earnest and you stop, pause and have a look for yourself, you will see. You know, to get rid of the notion of me, to get rid of the whole idea that there's a me here, which is the idea that seems to get in the way of awakening.
To recognize that is just to recognize that without one single solitary thought, if there was not one thought that arose, there is no me. Not one image, not one thought, one story. Whatever you want to call it. If that ceased, there is no me. And what you'd be left with is, ah, they've been telling me I already am that. And here I am. I am that. I'm here. And I've never actually been anywhere other than here. What gets in the way of that is this idea or this notion that there's a me here. And all that is, is thought. Nothing else. And it's recognizing that you're not responsible for any of it.
Zip until you reach a point where you realize you're responsible for everything. Including every single thought that is happening in these so-called people sitting in this room. But the notion of an individual here has to be seen through. It's got to be seen through. Because that's the point. That's the problem. That's the problem. Nothing else. Nothing else. There's an idea that there's a me here, present. And I'm an individual. That needs to be seen for what it is. And even that idea that there's a me here and I'm an individual and I'm trying to get this and I'm trying to learn non-duality. And I'm trying to let go or I'm trying to better myself or whatever.
Source is responsible for all of that. Those things. Those thoughts. Those ideas. There is no me here that's responsible for that. There isn't. If there was, again really simple. I don't know about you, but I would just switch it off for a couple of weeks and go fishing. Really. Turn it off. Turn it off. Whatever it is that's manifesting in the so-called personalized individual mind. Just turn it off. It'll be there in a couple of weeks. Guarantee. You can just switch it back on again and boom. The whole play will come back. We just switch it off and go fishing. You can't. That's the... You can't.
Why? Because it ain't you doing it. There's no you there doing it. It's not you doing it. If there was, you'd turn it off. You literally would. You literally would. You'd never have a bad thought. You wouldn't. You wouldn't. Why would you? Why? Why would you? Why would you? I'm not responsible for any of it. But sometimes, you know, what was alluded to earlier, sometimes bad shit seems to happen in our life. You know? I go, Jesus, why me? What have I done? And in my experience sitting here, the worst shit that ever happened in my life got me sitting here. And if it hadn't happened, I wouldn't be sitting here.
I have a question. Apart from the sun shines on everything that is a word of love from both sea or sun above, you have a question from Gad Potter. Oh, Gad. Hi, Gad. Yes. So he's asking, non-phenomenal manifestation, what is seeing? Emptiness seeing what? If seeing to happen, it must be someone who sees. Really? Perhaps. But that's purely a concept. That's purely an idea. If there is just source, source is responsible for everything. Bang. Boom. That's it. That's the bottom line. If there is seeing, fine. There's just no seer. There's no individual seer here. There's seeing happening everywhere. There's hearing happening everywhere. To put it, which may also be helpful, is because I think I know what is meant here, but it always feels that there is someone, there is a subject.
So in other scriptures, they call it pure subjectivity. And it means, which Terry was explaining a few times also, that it doesn't mean that there is no me, therefore there is no one there, therefore there is no sensation, there's nothing going on. The pure subjectivity, it means there is existence, there is awareness, there is so-called impersonal all-embracing self or source. And this all-embracing self or source or cognising emptiness is seeing through every single pair of eyes. But because of the limitation of every little camera, it sees only one at a time. But it doesn't mean that if there is no seer, that there is no me.
There is no seeing, because seer and seeing are inseparable. And also, if I want to say I'm seer, this is what I'm saying when you're relating to your last distraction or obstruction from realization, is that idea that I shouldn't be here, I'm still here. Like there is still an I that is here, but perhaps there is just here. There is not I that is within the living being. There is no limits of the body. But it's just the pure awareness experiencing itself in the apparent location of that body here. But the awareness is not limited to the body. So the seeing is happening, and of course the mind comes with the concept of, yes, but if there is a seeing, there must be someone who sees and something to be seen.
But then Bob's asked the question, usually today you didn't do it. If there is a seeing, there must be someone who sees and something to be seen. Is there something that is seen? Really? So let's try to take away the idea of seeing. There is no seeing. Who is the seer now? No seer. What is seen if there is no seeing? Zip, nothing. So, okay, let's leave the seeing and leave the seer. And there is nothing to see. Is the seer still seer if there is no object to be seen? Nope. Okay, so let's leave the object, but nobody's looking. Is seeing happening? Is the seer here if there is only object and nobody who is watching it?
So it actually shows that type of contemplation which is extremely helpful, is to actually realize that the seer, seer, seeing and seen, the whole Trinity is actually one, divided conceptually by the mind. It's one stick divided to seer and the seen. It's undivided, it's one, the seeing happening through the camera. But the seer, apparent seer and apparent objects are part of the whole functioning of the whole process. So looking from that perspective, life could be seen as the movement of the activity. Speaking is happening right now. Does it mean that there is some little thing inside the body somewhere that is doing the speaking? No, the speaking is just happening, just like digestion is happening, just like growing hair is happening.
Nobody does grow my hair, nobody does my digestion. And nobody does the speaking, it's the functioning. And nobody does the seeing, it's the functioning. So what we question, we question the individual that takes credit. Without that individual taking credit for the seeing, seeing is still a functioning. But who is a seer? Seer is only an idea in the mind that makes it practical, because the mind sees objects. So naturally it forms the subject. So it is a beautiful practical thing for communication. Because if I say there is no seer, I will say there is no seen also. And how we can talk about the carpets and chairs and other people we couldn't?
So it's beautiful. To know the truth and let the truth set you free is to actually be aware of the seeing, of the functioning. And still use the language, I'm seeing you. Nothing wrong with using the language if I know that this is a symbolic language. The symbol representing idea. But the idea not being anything solid or substantial, not being anything else than idea, when I say I, it doesn't mean there is anybody there. It is an idea. So I hope it helped. Unless, did you want to add something Terry? Because I see there is, oh no, there is no more. From God. Hopefully that will help.
Did you want to add anything Bob? I just don't like the word source. What is it, tomato source, chilli source? And candy, but if there is a source that means there is a beginning somewhere. Yeah, some people really like it. Yeah, well it's a word you've got to use somewhere. But there is a lot of words. I use it a lot like Ida. Yeah. One of the 57 varieties. Yeah. Yeah, it's a little bit newer words. So it's actually a little bit less, holding less of the associations as the other words. But yeah, as you say, you may like it, some others don't. Because I've got quite a geographical mind or visual mind.
For me everything is so boundless in terms of the whole. The source is just like a blob somewhere. So it doesn't have a beginning to me. Because I don't really, yeah, just because of the way this head works. I get away with it being a beginning type word. When talking about seeing and the experience of non-duality, it seems that a better word to use is vision. Yeah. There's a vision. Absolutely, yeah. And in that vision, things start to disappear or appear differently. An example might be, I was driving a car back from the Mallee to Melbourne. So it was a few hours of driving. We're sitting there, not doing much.
Might have the radio on. I'm listening. And I'd also been studying Longchamp as natural perfection. And in that they talk about the spaciousness, the spontaneity, the unity of the ground, what they call the ground. The source, as Terry says. Yeah. And the windscreen of the car became an example of the ground. I was looking through the windscreen without thinking too much. Noticing how objects got bigger and bigger, disappeared out of view. And then objects got smaller and smaller at the same time. Things were changing. Colours and shapes were changing. And somehow one became immersed in this vision. And in that experience, which lasted pretty much all the way home, it was known that there was no time, no space.
There was no centre to this experience. It was just, you couldn't say it was being viewed from one point. It was just, everything was changing and flowing. The me was still there, but it was sort of quite insignificant. And at one point, I'd sort of tested this, what was happening. And I just glanced down and watched the hands on the steering wheel. Mmm. And then the sense of touch sort of came back. But it was known that I wasn't driving the car. But the things were just happening. And that seemed to sum up everything. That things happened. So that was a kind of vision. A vision.
And Douglas Arney said that he was driving down from Queensland to him. And he says, I swallowed Australia. As it came up, it disappeared. That's it. Also, one thing I'm sure you've noticed is when everything moves, how do you know it moves? Because you are still. You are the pure stillness. You are something that is not moving. Things appear and disappear within that field or space that you are. You are the space of awareness. And things show up and then get bigger and then disappear and get smaller there. Yeah. There was room for a little bit of playfulness in this as well. I had a little pocket camera sitting on the seat beside me.
So every now and then I'd just switch it on and just hold my hand out the window and click. And later when I looked at the photographs, they were pretty much blurry. And colours were sort of flowing into each other. And it was pretty much a reminder of what the whole thing felt like. But it was a vision that was quite different to the ordinary where me reifies everything as, crystallises everything as solid, three-dimensional. Time and space. That sort of vision is actually like a peripheral vision. It's a peripheral, relaxed type of vision when Bob is saying that keep your five senses wide open with unfixated awareness.
So we are not fixating because apparently the sense of seeing works the way the brain computes one thing at a time. So you constantly just make things solid by the act of acknowledging them with the seeing. But when the vision is completely relaxed, the experience is quite different. And it's really kind of pleasant to experiment with. It's great to actually really unfixated sort of vision. I often use also, vision is a fantastic word. But I use instead of seeing, the field of seeing or space of seeing. Because I had some questions from people who could not compute the seeing as a functioning. And the capacity of seeing, of field of seeing.
And I was like, oh, alright, okay, I get it. Because yes, it can be pretty confusing, especially for non-English speaker, for people who, or listener who is, that was a Spanish guy that asked this. So vision of field of space of seeing, because it is ultimately all space. Space of awareness or sky-like awareness or field of awareness or field of seeing, hearing. It also seems that the senses are not limited at all in certain circumstances. That there is, you know, hearing can be, can take, can go outside of this normal view. But in every case it seems like I'm just sort of going on my experience.
But there's a going beyond of the normal samsaric reality. Well, the feeling that one's caged, you know, me is in a cage and can't get out. But when that, when one steps out of the cage, what is left? You can't say you know what's left. Yeah. It's, it's pretty much. It's beyond knowing. And yet it's, it's undeniable that, that yeah, it's, it's the zine of reality. Yeah. Apparently in this day and age too, we use the focus viewing so much, like to read stuff, to look at computers, to do everything, that the general sort of relaxed focus, we really don't employ much at all anymore.
So I, I... I mean, when this person was doing the workshop, I couldn't quite get the difference between the two, but, you know, that would be so, you know, narrow focused. It's apparently a good step to just step back out to the... Kat Potter is asking, what is the me? Is it a mind construct and why is it solid? You want to answer on this one, Bob? Of course, I mean, you said it a few times today, but what makes it solid? What, me? Yes. Belief that it's something solid, something real. Only a belief, just like what makes Santa Claus real for the children, only belief.
I think they say, seeing no thing, yet it is seen. All these things we think we discriminate, put the lamps on, you're seeing them, but they're really no thing. And who's seeing them? No thing is seeing no thing. You know, time's caught up with it. Yes, so we're, we're over time. Thank you everyone.
